“North Meets South: The Pottery Works of Jim Spires”
Circa Gallery will host an art exhibition entitled “North Meets South: The Pottery Works of Jim Spires” from September 11-October 2, 2009. The exhibition will feature artwork from potter Jim Spires, born and raised among the potteries of Ohio.
After completing his bachelor's degree in fine art & education, Jim taught secondary school for awhile, but he longed to be a full time artist. He attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut, earning a master's degree in design and sculpture. Supporting himself as a graphic designer for Eastman Kodak in New York, Jim developed his skills as a potter and sculptor in his spare time. In 1991, Jim returned to his native Ohio to make his mark on the U.S. pottery and sculpture markets.
Through high profile shows, exhibits, competitions, and support of the North Carolina Zoological Society as a major donor, he gained an enthusiastic following and acquired major collectors nationwide. After a trip to the Picasso Museum in Vallauris, and meeting with the French potters, some who had actually known Picasso, Jim was energized! He began to create ceramic sculptural works based on the "master's" ceramic pieces; early Southern face jugs, and combined these with images from French impressionist's paintings of the 1900's.
This is Jim's second appearance in the Florence Biennale. He hopes this year's presentation will help to bridge the traditional gap between high craft and fine art and contribute positively to discussion of the topic on the international art scene.
Jim will open this September at the Circa Gallery in Asheboro, NC and in the spring at Gallery 13 in Arles, France. The opening reception for the artist will be held on September 11 from 5-8 p.m. This event is free and the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. For more information about the exhibition please visit www.circagallerync.com, email circagallery@gmail.com or call the gallery 336-736-8015.

Circa Gallery to host “Watercolor Trio” Exhibition
October 9- November 6, 2009
5-8 p.m.

Circa Gallery will host an art exhibition from October 9- November 6, 2009 entitled “Watercolor Trio”. The exhibition will feature artwork from watercolor artists Cass Catlett, Carol Meetze-Moates and John Hyatt.
Cass Catlett a Greensboro artist began painting for the first time in 2003 after an epiphany that revealed an unconscious thought: “I have always wanted to paint”. Through initial watercolor classes she found a passion for color and quickly discovered that she would not be painting in a traditional realistic style. She is drawn to fluidity, mystery, whimsy and the alluring play between form and formless. Color being the most important aspect of her painting and all her work makes her soul sing.
Carol Meetze-Moates grew up in Randleman and began her art interests in high school there. Continuing studies were at Greensboro College, UNC-G, and commercial art at GTCC. She worked professionally from 1978 to 1999 as Visual Arts Director with City Arts, City of Greensboro at the Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie Street.
During her career as Art Director, she had the opportunity to study with many regional and international art instructors such as Skip Lawrence, Christopher Schink, Stephen Quiller, Daniel Greene, Arne Westerman, Ann Templeton, Carol Barnes, Al Stein, Anita West and Albert Handel, Judy Wagner, Peter Thornton (calligrapher), John Lines, and Chuck Mclachlan. Having the opportunity to learn exciting new approaches to art technique and philosophy has been a rich experience.
She is a member and served on the board of the Greensboro Artist League, also a board member of the Greensboro Library Arts Commission, the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, and Carolina Lettering Arts Society. Carol's work is in private and corporate collections, and has been accepted in several national juried shows winning occasional awards.
John Hyatt from Wilmington, NC is a transparent watercolor artist and was born in Evansville, Indiana. Following a 24 year career in the military he became a Registered Nurse and currently works in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit of a large, 600 bed, regional hospital.
In early 2004, he began to experiment in watercolor and soon discovered an artist whose work he admired, Sterling Edwards, a world class artist and instructor in watercolor, oil and acrylic. He, like Sterling, was captivated by the transparency of watercolors and set off, as Sterling did with watercolor master Zoltan Szabo, on a process of developing his own form of watercolor expression. Sterlings loose, flowing style of painting, utilizing mixes of subtle pastel lights and bold darks, were what inspired John to continue to pursue this medium. He has attended numerous workshops with Sterling, and has taken his advice to "find your own style and keep it loose".
John is a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, the Wilmington Art Association and has works exhibited in numerous private collections and a corporate collection.
The opening reception for the artists will be held on October 9 from 5-8 p.m. This event is free and the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. For more information about the exhibition please visit www.circagallerync.com, emailcircagallery@gmail.com or call the gallery 336-736-8015.
